Industry opportunities in agriculture, forestry and fishing

From the houses and buildings we live in to the food we eat every day, the agriculture, forestry and fishing industries contribute strongly to our economy and our way of life.

What to expect from a career in this industry

The agriculture, forestry and fishing industries have huge impact on the lives of all Australians.

With international concern regarding exploitation of the ocean, the aquaculture industry is seeing growth, both locally and globally. Meanwhile on land, the size and farmland diversity of Australia means that almost all seasonal crops and livestock can be grown throughout the country.

Opportunities to take these skills abroad are also available. Worldwide demand gives you an abundance of choice when planning your path. Career outcomes in the agriculture, forestry and fishing industries can range from an agricultural technician, aquaculture farmer, product quality controller, station manager, marine transport professional and more.

Some of the benefits of being skilled in this industry include:

  • Working outdoors
  • Stable employment
  • High employability for seasonal and ongoing opportunities
  • Working interstate or abroad
  • Australia’s respected and innovative agriculture, aquaculture and forestry industries mean skilled Australians are an appealing option for employers overseas.

There are many pathways you can take to become skilled in these fields. Pursuing your area of expertise in agriculture could be starting a farm apprenticeship or an agricultural traineeship. These generally cover a Certificate II and III in agriculture and can take 1-2 years to complete.

Once completed, you have the option of gaining a Diploma in Farm Production Management (Beef and Cattle), a Diploma of Station Management (Sheep and Grain), or a Diploma of Piggery Production Management. These diplomas generally take two years to complete alongside practical training.
