The Fair Work Commission has announced a 1.75% increase to the National Minimum Wage (NMW) following its 2020 Annual Wage Review.

Normally a National Minimum Wage increase will take effect for everyone from 1st of July that year, however due to the issues created by COVID-19, this time the increase will be rolled out at different dates for different industry sectors.

Most Australian Apprentices are employed under an Award.  The increase to awards will happen in 3 groups:

  • 1st July 2020 – Frontline Health Care & Social Assistance Workers, Teachers & Childcare, Other Essential Services
  • 1st November 2020 – Construction, Manufacturing, A range of other industries.
  • 1st February 2021 – Accommodation & Food Services, Arts & Recreation Services, Aviation, Retail, Tourism

For Australian Apprentices NOT employed under an award or agreement, the National Minimum Wage will be $753.80 per (38hr) week or $19.84 per hour.  This applies from the first full pay period starting on or after 1/7/2020.

Please visit the Fair Work Website for a more detailed explanation of how the roll-out will take place and when it will apply to you.
