What is an Automotive Electrician?

Automotive Electricians install, maintain, diagnose faults and repair all kinds of electrical wiring and computer based components in cars, trucks, boats, buses, caravans, trailers, earthmoving and agricultural equipment. Auto Electricians also diagnose and repair alternators, starter motors ignitions and more.

Examples of tasks and duties:

  • Diagnose, service and repair faults on electronically controlled vehicle systems including electronic fuel injection and ignition, anti-lock braking, cruise control and automatic transmissions
  • Test, replace, recondition and install equipment such as generators, alternators, starter motors and batteries
  • Service all components of the ignition system
  • Use specialised Electrical tools and equipment
  • Wire and re-wire new and existing electrical components

How do I get into this trade?

It would be advisable to complete an Automotive Pre-Apprenticeship. You would have needed to complete Year 10 with good results in English and Maths. You may also be able to start this apprenticeship while you are still at school.

What does your career prospect look like?

Once you have completed your Automotive Electrical Technology Apprenticeship, you can work for an experienced Automotive Electrician to further develop your knowledge and may wish to become a business owner.
