What is a Refrigeration & Air-Conditioning Mechanic?

Refrigeration and Air-conditioning Mechanics install, maintain, repair and test refrigeration and air-conditioning systems in a variety of domestic, industrial and commercial settings including homes, shops, factories, offices, hospitals, aged care facilities, airports, libraries, museums etc.

Examples of tasks and duties:

  • Read and follow plans and specifications to Install units
  • Drill holes, cut, bend and place piping and install mounting brackets to hold system firmly in place
  • Install and commission compressors, motors, condensers, evaporators, air filters, gauges and switches and copper lines for steam, gas, refrigerant, compressed air, oil, fuel and chilled water
  • Diagnose and rectify faults in systems and equipment
  • Attach piping to refrigeration systems

How do I get into this trade?

You need to complete a Refrigeration and Air-Conditioning Apprenticeship. You will need very solid Year 10 English, Maths and Science to be considered for a school-based Apprenticeship in Year 11 or 12. In addition, it is highly recommended that individuals will have completed the Pre-Apprenticeship course Certificate II in Electrotechnology (Career Start) whilst at school if wanting to be considered for a school-based Apprenticeship.

What does your career prospect look like?

Completing your Refrigeration and Air-Conditioning Apprenticeship will have enabled you to develop skills and knowledge which could see you become a Supervisor or eventually, a Business Operator.
