What is a Light Vehicle Mechanic?
Light Vehicle Mechanics overhaul, service and repair the mechanical parts including engines, gearboxes, clutches and brakes of cars, utilities and vans. They are also responsible for minor and major maintenance including oil changes, engine tune ups and more.
Examples of tasks and duties:
- Test drive vehicles to locate and identify fault as described and communicated by client
- Test, repair and service cars and replace worn or damaged parts
- Do routine services e.g. change oil, oil filters etc.
- Fill in service log book accordingly
- Carry out diagnostic procedures
- Perform safety checks
- Record service or repair particulars, time allocated etc. for invoicing purposes
How do I get into this trade?
You need to complete a Light Vehicle Mechanical Apprenticeship. Solid Year 10 results in English and Maths is required, together with a Certificate II in Automotive Servicing Technology. You may be able to start this Apprenticeship while you are still at school, however to be considered for a school-based Apprenticeship, individuals must hold a manual driver’s licence and own a vehicle.

Once you have completed your Light Vehicle Mechanical Apprenticeship, some great opportunities await you. You can become a Light Vehicle Mechanic, Small Motors Mechanic, Workshop Foreman or Manager, a Specialist in advanced diagnostics or mechanical overhauls / restorations or even a Business Owner. In addition, you may wish to complete an Automotive Electrical Apprenticeship to compliment your light vehicle mechanical qualification and to maintain currency with changes to the Automotive Industry.
