What is a Spray Painter?

Spray Painters do all kinds of paint work from restoration, colour matching and full repaints on vehicles including a range of cars, commercial vehicles, recreation vehicles, motorbikes and marine craft. They prepare the body for painting by sanding, cleaning and masking the surface. An apprentice spray painter will learn how to use specialised tools and equipment.

Examples of tasks and duties:

  • Minor touch-up work
  • Masking surrounding panels and areas for painting
  • Sand surfaces using hand or electric/air sanders
  • Preparing quote on repairs and repaints
  • Colour mixing and matching to existing paint shade
  • Applying primers, base and top coats using spray guns, rubbing down surfaces between coats
  • Buffing and waxing of finished surfaces

How do I get into this trade?

It would be advised to complete an Automotive Pre-Apprenticeship qualification as well as having solid results in Year 10 English and Maths at a minimum. This Apprenticeship can also be commenced whilst completing your senior secondary studies.

What does your career prospect look like?

Once you have completed your Spray Painting Apprenticeship (Certificate III in Automotive Vehicle Body Tradesperson, Vehicle Painting) you will be able to work as a competent Tradesperson with an employer, and may wish to become a Business Owner in the future.
